Surfing with a Mission
The Testimony of Nancy, Currently on staff with YWAM Yilan)
In 2013, Nancy came to know the Lord through a group of foreigners she met in the local cafe she frequented in Taipei. She found out later that this cafe was no ordinary cafe and her new friends were no ordinary employees, but it was a cafe run by Christian missionaries. Their lifestyle of faith, love, and service had gradually convinced her of her need for Christ. That same year, Nancy gave her life to Jesus and experienced firsthand the power of a missional lifestyle.
Shortly after, Nancy discovered a newfound passion for surfing. She became determined to find a way to combine her love for surfing and missions. During her search, she met a man named Chris Chon, who was part of Youth With A Mission (YWAM). He shared his vision to pioneer a Discipleship Training School (DTS) for surfers in Yilan, Taiwan and invited her to be a part of it. Excitement grew in her heart knowing she had just received an answer to prayer. She found a space in YWAM to express her unique gifts and calling to combine surfing and missions.
YWAM has helped equip Nancy for cross-cultural missions through their various training programs and live-learn environments. From the time she met Chris, Nancy completed four training schools with YWAM that each played a unique and important role in her preparation. In addition to classroom training, YWAM offered an extremely unique learning environment for Nancy to grow as a cross-cultural missionary. As she lived with other foreign missionaries from all different nationalities, backgrounds, and cultures, Nancy learned firsthand the complex and rewarding experience of living in a dynamic, multicultural setting that she could apply in any situation and with any people.
Today, Nancy continues to live a lifestyle of missions through surfing and inspires others to do the same with their own gifts and callings.
